More Than Paddling: Community and Calm on the River Torridge

More Than Paddling: Community and Calm on the River Torridge

The Seaful Ukraine SUP club on the river Torridge, has flourished since it’s launch in 2021. We now see our regular participants paddling independently under the watchful eyes of Lorna & Marc.

Last week, we welcomed new paddlers, Dima and his daughter Melissa. Dima had thoughtfully waited three years to join, wanting to give space to others he felt needed it more.

Both were absolute naturals! Within minutes of launching, they were standing, practising proper paddle strokes, changing direction, and finding their stance with ease.

We made our way from the launch point, upriver, toward the Bideford Long Bridge.  The bridge dates back to medieval times and boasts 24 arches.

Paddling companionably on the estuary in near-perfect conditions, Dima shared how incredibly relaxing and quiet he felt it was. And how wonderful it was to see Bideford from a new perspective on the water.

Along the way, Dima pointed out the effect the wind had on his paddling, sparking a discussion about the tide, weather, ocean protection, and how we can notice subtle changes over time.

As we neared high tide and reached the bridge, we allowed our boards to flow with the tide, taking us under the arches. Once on the other side, we made the most of the changing current to lay on our boards, dangle our hands and feet in the cool water and close our eyes. A Seaful Mindful Moment, letting go and connecting with the water and sounds around us.

After a peaceful float, enjoying the gulls and oystercatchers overhead, we started to make our way back under the bridge. At this point, I felt that Dima was confident enough on his board to put a little space between us. This gave him the opportunity to enjoy some independent time on the water.

Melissa, who had loved laying on her board and dipping her hands, was eager to submerge even more! We paddled a little distance off, and with a reassuring nod and encouragement about her buoyancy aid, she eased herself into the water. The perfect opportunity (or excuse!) to practice self-rescues.

Meeting up with instructor Marc and the other paddlers, we made our way back to shore as a community. Seeing everyone together after enjoying the water, building new and existing connections, and chatting about their experiences and excitement to be part of Seaful’s story truly brings home why Seaful and the dedication of our volunteers, along with Cal & I, are so profoundly important.
